Behind on ISO 20022? Here's how to create a contingency plan

Swift has provided a range of support options for contingency planning. And we’ve gathered them all into one clear, easy-to-use guide.

The ISO 20022 CBPR+ deadline is nearly here.

Are you ready?

If you’re reading this, maybe not.

ISO 20022 was first introduced in 2004. But as of May 2025, only 41.2% of traffic on the Swift network is using the ISO 20022 format.

That means banks now have just a few months left to migrate their MT messages (payment instructions) to the new MX format ahead of the CBPR+ deadline on 22 November 2025. After this date, Swift’s FIN (Financial Information Network) will no longer support MT messages for financial institution-to-financial institution cross-border payments.

If you’ve fallen behind, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered.

This guide will help you build a contingency plan. Inside, you’ll find:

  • An overview of Swift’s translation services — and what they mean for message handling, validation, and any associated charges

  • Clear steps to maintain compliance and business continuity as the changes take effect

  • A practical checklist to support a smooth transition and avoid disruption

If you need help navigating any of the changes, we’re here to support you.
